Kia ora

Welcome to our second quarterly APPLAUSE panui, keeping you informed on all our latest developments on our new home in the city. We start with some great news!

Kaupapa Hiranga Tahua, Lottery Significant Projects Fund, have awarded us $2 million towards our $10 million target for the new theatre. This is a significant boost and takes us well over halfway to completing our fundraising goal.

"We are delighted at the news. The fund is there to provide grants for projects to purchase, create or improve capital assets of regional or national significance that help make communities stronger.

A strong arts precinct is integral to the success of our city and our re-build" said Steve Wakefield, APPLAUSE Campaign Chair.

"The new Court Theatre will continue to showcase excellence in performance,
providing a stimulating and varied programme, and dramatic learning environment for everyone”

A huge thanks to Kaupapa Hiranga Tahua, Lottery Significant Projects Fund.

Groundworks complete and next steps

With the groundworks complete, construction is due to start on the three-storey theatre in 2022. Tender documents are currently with the short-listed contractors and the main contract will awarded soon.

New Zealand's Athfield Architects and Haworth Tompkins (London, UK) bring their combined reputation for intelligent, purposeful design to the project. UK based Haworth Tompkins is the world’s leading architectural theatre specialist, having designed theatres for The National and Theatre Royal Drury Lane, among others.

Athfield Architects make architecture that responds with spirit and ingenuity to the pressing challenges of our time: the need for sustainable design and public spaces that reflect the community, and genuine collaboration.

The result is a design expressively embodying manaakitanga, whanaungatanga and warm invitation, designed to be inherently adaptable.

There will be a 360-seat main theatre, a 120-150 seat theatre, multipurpose studios and an education studio. The architects have made all spaces flexible and functional to suit all kinds of shows.

A new chapter for our Addington home
You many have read in the news that the Addington site where we are currently based has been sold. The Court Theatre moved into the former grain store in 2011 after the earthquakes damaged our Arts Centre home.

We will remain on the site until we move into the city when our new building is ready for us.
Did you know?
The theatre’s original location was in the Canterbury Provincial Council Chambers, opening in 1971? The theatre was occasionally pushed out to the Durham Street Art Gallery when the Māori Land Court needed the chamber. The gallery became an interim home in 1971 and 1972. Over the following years The Court found temporary homes in the Beggs Theatrette and the Orange Hall before settling in the Arts Centre in 1976.
Upcoming events – save the dates

There are two very special events for the new theatre in the planning so please save the dates!

A Banquet to build the new Court Theatre

A sensational night is planned for our guests at Christ’s College on Saturday 15 October in the fabulous Memorial Dining Hall. Due to popular demand, this event is FULLY BOOKED.

This auspicious occasion will feature a Gala Auction and we will bring that online in the next edition so everyone can take part. We are thrilled to have been supported by so many people.

All funds raised will form part of the APPLAUSE campaign for our new home in the city.

Flaxmere Garden Visit

In November the wonderful Penny Zino is opening her beautiful Flaxmere Garden especially for us. Sunday 20 November is an opportunity to visit this Garden of International Significance and support the APPLAUSE.

The Friends of The Court Theatre will be on hand on the day with a plant auction with there will be an option for a gourmet treats available and some interesting guests…more information to follow.
